When single origin releases lead, Tandem’s roasting reads light, clean, and place expressive, supported by clear, producer forward communication. The lineup, however, includes blends that dilute definition and pull focus from origin, and the roast spectrum often runs a notch deeper than our baseline for this style. Quality control and service are steady across the Portland coffee bars, but overall alignment with our frame is partial, which is why the recognition sits below the very top tier.

Background

Founded in Portland, Maine in 2012 by Will and Kathleen Pratt, Tandem began with a roastery and coffee bar in East Bayside and added the Congress Street Coffee and Bakery in 2014. The house purpose is summed up simply, “Spread Joy,” and the menu pairs seasonal single origin coffees with blends, sourced through close relationships and roasted with a light, clarity driven touch that keeps sweetness and place in front.

Panel evaluation

Tandem’s blends read safe but flatten character, softening origin lines and muting the detail that makes great coffees memorable. The single origin side is the draw: lots are roasted light and taste clean and sweet, with a calm, well drawn acidity and flavors that hold their shape as the cup cools. Washed profiles provide tidy structure and naturals add lift without noise. Labels and product pages keep the producer and process easy to see, so it is simple to connect what you taste to where it was grown.
