A Matter of Concrete
A Matter of Concrete has pushed the European conversation toward lighter, transparency-driven roasting while popularizing high-quality experimental lots that still read clean and origin focused. Today the coffees are precise and sweet with clear acidity and producer-forward communication; the range, however, leans more experimental than classic Nordic style, which keeps them at Two Stars despite strong consistency and craft.
Background
Founded in 2021 by Coffee Masters London champion Rob Clarijs, A Matter of Concrete roasts from the UNESCO-listed Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam. The philosophy is data driven and producer first: coffees are selected through blind cuppings, with a split between classic profiles and uncommon, high-end lots, and roasting kept light to emphasise sweetness, clarity, and place. Packaging prioritises circularity with reusable AMOC jars and lightweight refill systems, and labels carry full farm-level detail. The roastery is not open to the public at present

Panel evaluation
Cups read clean and sweet with composed acidity and tidy finishes; classic lots feel structured while uncommon releases add range without losing form. Extraction is predictable across pour over and espresso. Packaging is distinctive yet information forward, and producer, variety, process, and harvest are easy to find online and on the jar.
